Objective: This study aims to determine whether the correction exercise program using props is effective for cervical and thoracic alignment and muscle activity of the cervical flexors and extensors of office workers.
Method: The subjects of this study were 22 male and female adults who were working in the K-Hospital in Seoul. The self-myofascial release and muscle strengthening exercise was conducted twice daily, five times a week, for 30 min. each, for four weeks using a foam roller.
Results: The changes in the heights of subjects¡¯ heads, shoulders, and pelvises showed that all alignments were closer to the center line, all of which exhibited significant differences(p<.05). The muscle activities of cervical flexor(sternocleidomastoid muscle) and extensor(splenius capitis) were also increased, which also showed significant difference(p<.05).
Conclusion: In light of the health benefits and the prevention of chronic conditions of office workers who require improved posture habits, the correction exercise using props should be positively considered for proper posture maintenance; further future studies are still needed.
